Found a great bunch of Shaggy mains on my way home. Oh so good.
Scored on a rainy day walk today!
Chestnuts on the front trees are huge this year. Often so big that I only get 2 rather then 3 nuts, and even though they are big they are still sweet. I love when I do nothing and things just come out good.
Nice big wine caps coming up. They have a different taste really good with lemon pepper not real good with garlic. Take while to cool down, very wet. Purple laccaria coming up too
Lots of rooted mushrooms today, might be time to make hot and sour soup. Really long roots.
Score found huge cauliflower mushroom. So good! Little hard to clean.
Went out for late ramps with the neighbor and we got his 4 wheeler stuck in the middle of the woods.. in 2 feet of mud 30 min of digging it out mostly with our hands and arm shovels just got stuck to the mud, up to our knees…. still got the ramps beer for scale.
PS. If you harvest any roots you should get a plastic ceiling grate spray hard with a hose and it will speed up processing. I also recommend a box cutter instead of a knife.
PPS I am the nerd with the bucket I usually have a beard but I was Clark Kent for comic con last week.
Oyster mushrooms are out. And I picked a Dryad Saddle too. I breaded and baked them with some fresh Ramps. The oysters are always great but is still can’t get the Dryad Saddles to taste good.
Inky caps are up. One of my favorite mushrooms, Inky’s are one of the first mushrooms up in my area and I look for them when the fiddle heads start to end. They decompose in a few hours so you really will not get to try them unless you forage them. They do have a somewhat poisonous lookalike called the alcohol inky. It reacts with alcohol and you get to vomit for 24 hours. So … don’t mess up. Anyway I like them sautéed in butter with ramps sail and pepper. Then served on bruschetta and with a saintly blue cheese.
Picking dandelions for Mother’s Day. My wife started this tradition in 2011 and we have not missed a year. This year we did jelly and dandelion mead.
Happy Mother’s Day
